Intermetallics 2013 - International conference on fundamentals and applications of intermetallic materials – Program now online

|   2013-MSE-NL-07

The scientific program is now available!

Facing an increasing demand for new materials with improved properties, intermetallic based materials offer a promising perspective. A possible combination of high strength, low density and good corrosion resistance qualifies them for structural applications, specifically at high temperatures and in severe environments. As some intermetallic phases show unique properties like shape memory and thermo electric effects or do have appealing magnetic properties they are also of interest for various functional applications. While intermetallics today are well accepted as shape memory alloys they are only now – after three decades of exhaustive research and development – used for structural applications, i.e. in flying gas turbines.

In spite of the current industrial breakthrough of intermetallic based materials, a regular meeting covering all aspects and types of intermetallic based materials is missing, in particular in Europe. It is therefore that DGM with Intermetallics 2013 initiates a new bi-annual international conference. It encompasses fundamental aspects, characterisation, testing, modelling and application and is devoted to bringing together experts from all fields of science and industry involved in development and application of intermetallic based materials. Though it is a newly launched conference, it builds up on previous successful, specialised meetings such as ?-TiAl organised by GfE Metalle und Materialien GmbH, Nuremberg and the Discussion Meeting on the Development of Innovative Iron Aluminium Alloys. The choice of local organisers and members of the international advisory board guarantees not only representation of all relevant topics but also a good balance between research and application. Topics of general importance will be dealt with in a single session in the morning, while current materials, such as ?-TiAl, iron aluminides, silicides or NiTi-shape memory alloys, or certain aspects of intermetallics will be the subject of two specialised parallel sessions in the afternoon. A special topic session will be devoted to the increasing number of powder metallurgical (PM) techniques that are currently employed for processing intermetallic based materials. This session is open for all topics related to the PM-processing. A high-profile poster session will be rounding off the conference.

The conference will take place at Kloster Banz near Bamberg. The cloister is situated in a remote place above the valley of the river Main. As a well known educational centre it is an ideal place for conferences with its good infrastructure and relaxing atmosphere. However, being situated in the central part of Germany it is well accessible from Nuremberg and Frankfurt airports and a shuttle bus service is planned from Nuremberg.

The Intermetallics 2013 will be accompanied by an extensive, specialised industrial exhibition. Are you interested in supporting the  Intermetallics 2013 conference and in presenting your company/institute? Please contact Alexia Ploetz via e-mail: intermetallics@dgm.de)

We are looking forward to your participation and would be delighted to meet you in Banz,
